Cinefest Hall, Ga State University
hatgi, Raj Babbar, Harsh Chhaya, Rajat Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Deepshikha
Synopsis
:Suicides in the Vidarbha region in central India, where 1.8 million families farm, have been occurring at the rate of one every eight hours. The farmers say subsidized cotton in other countries is keeping their prices too low and forcing them to live on the financial edge, leaving many in the clutches of unscrupulous lenders. Faced with debt they cannot pay, many kill themselves, often by drinking poison made from their own farm supplies.

By American standards, the debts are minuscule, a few hundred dollars, and the film leaves the impression that the suicide phenomenon is now feeding on itself. Like suicide bombing, it appears to be a sort of group statement of rage and despair, though without the hate. Also like suicide bombing, it is completely counterproductive: Surviving family members are left far worse off.

Cinefest Hall, Ga State University
Cast : Bhagu Gamit, Mitesh Dabhi, Raju Barot and Illam Pawar

Synopsis: The Story of Eklavya from Mahabharata depicts the plight of the aboriginal people (especially of India) very well. The tribal boy, who wants to learn archery like any other youth, is denied just because he does not belong to the ladder of castes. In spite of the rejection he becomes a wonderful archer. Realizing the great skills of Eklavya, Dron (the teacher) traps him to offer the contribution traditionally made to the teacher. Eklavya unaware of the intention of the teacher agrees to offer. To the shock of everyone, the teacher demands the thumb of the best archer, Eklavya.

In this film Director Vaghela treats same story from the subaltern perspective. The strength of Tribal people lies in their unity, which is expressed in various ways since birth to death. The forces from outside of their world break this characteristic, which is so essential for their identity and survival. The story teller weaves the Eklavya episode from Mahabharata to show how the thumb, which symbolizes their strength – unity, is constantly being asked in various ways even today.

CHATH – A Roof Without Walls
Screening:Sunday Nov. 18 1:00 PM
GT-Student Center Auditorium
Cast:Sanjay Malhotra, Liyakat Khan Pathan, Charu Gupta and Kamal Daruwala

Synopsis
: The film Chath is inspired by true stories of homeless people in America. It delves into the dynamics of the relationships between 3 homeless Indians in USA. These homeless beings are hungry not only for bread but for love, naked not only for lack of clothing but naked for human dignity and respect, homeless not only for want of a room of bricks - but homeless because of rejection. They come from entirely different backgrounds but share the same conditions. The different personalities clash and this raises pertinent questions about life and existence, and about dealing with life\'s failures. We have tried to imbibe the realistic side of the homeless into the dramatic side of \"Chath\" by exploring actual conditions in shelter homes with respect to food, shelter and hygiene. The fact that homelessness is more of an emotional and mental phenomena rather than an economic condition has been duly represented in the form of a very captivating and dramatic screenplay.

“Chath” stars Sanjay Malhotra, Liykhat Khan, Charu Gupta, Shayna Glassman, Sarah Tyler and is written/directed by Hyder Bilgrami and Tirthankar Das.
