Loins of Punjab by Manish Acharya
|
|
|
|
|
Synopsis: When Loins of Punjab sponsors a singing contest in a small New Jersey town, a motley group of would-be stars converge on a hotel with the hope of becoming the next “desi” idol. The contestants include a ruthless philanthropist, a bhangra rapper, a young
prodigy with an over-protective family, a reckless actress, a lovelorn businessman, and an entrepreneurial yogi. Backstage intrigues abound as the competitors battle on stage and behind-the-scenes. The stellar cast which includes Shabana Azmi, Ajay Naidu, Ayesha Dharkar and even writer-director Manish Acharya, plays their respective roles with sincerity and deliver genuine laughs without condescending to their often misguided characters. Acharya deftly juggles their stories with a shooting style and tone that resembles American comedies like WAITING FOR GUFFMAN and BEST IN SHOW. The result is a hilarious satire about dreams, ambition and competition.

Winner of Jury Award at the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2008,
Copper Wing Award at the Phoenix Film Festival 2008,
Rosebud Award at Verzaubert International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2008
Synopsis:
For 20-year-old Gaurav Sengupta, filmmaking is an obsession.
So much so that his camcorder is akin to an appendage that goes where he goes,
capturing every raw detail of his life. He struggles to negotiate his passion for filmmaking with
his father’s more traditional expectations for his future. His girlfriend arranges
a meeting for him with her Bollywood producer father but the man’s mainstream ideas
send Gaurav running towards more independent horizons. He meets Gayatri, an intelligent,
progressive woman with whom he instantly hits it off. Their relationship grows more serious
and Gayatri confesses her desire for a long-term relationship…minus Gaurav’s camcorder.
Gaurav must now decide whether to give in to the expectations of those around him or
to continue talking to his camera, the only one who really listens.
Strikingly original and darkly humorous, MISSED CALL is told in a captivating,
vérité style that makes this directorial debut a must see for
independent film aficionados worldwide. It boasts delightfully
realistic performances and witty writing that capture the passion,
pain and promise of urban youth navigating the rocky road toward
adulthood.
